Help for People With Skin Rashes Caused by Water Contamination

In my visit to Flint we were struck by the epidemic of skin disease which has spread throughout Flint. It seems that almost every family has at least one person who has experienced skin rashes since the water crisis hit.

Now there is good news. A study is being conducted to investigate the nature and cause of the skin rashes. Four dermatologists have volunteered to see people for free.

Anyone who is still experiencing skin rashes should participate in this study. Here is how:

People in Flint with rashes should call 211 and ask to be included in the rash study, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services officials said Friday.

Callers will be asked the following questions:

  • Are you on Flint water?
  • Do you have a current or ongoing rash?
  • Is your rash different than a rash you may normally get?
  • Did the rash start or get worse after the switch back to Detroit water on October 16, 2015?
  • Did you see a doctor for your rash?
  • Did you get a diagnosis that explains your rash?

Then, people will be referred to one of the dermatologists who is part of the study. In addition, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will test the water in the homes of those involved in the investigation.

Call 2-1-1 for details.

This is just one phase of the comprehensive study which needs to be done to evaluate all the health impacts the water crisis has had on the residents of Flint. We continue to urge that a comprehensive study be done.
